Hat Size Guide for Big Heads

How to measure your head circumference correctly

To find a cap that truly fits, you need to know your head circumference. Measuring takes a minute and you don't need anything special. It's the only step between you and a cap that finally fits.

What you'll need

A flexible tape measure is ideal. If you don't have one, use a piece of string or a shoelace — measure it with a ruler afterwards.

Step-by-step measuring guide

Step 1: Take the tape measure (or string) and wrap it around your head approximately 1 cm above your ears. Run the tape across the middle of your forehead — that's the widest part of your head.

Step 2: The tape should sit snugly but not tight. You should be able to comfortably slide one finger underneath.

Step 3: Note the measurement in centimetres. If you're using string, mark where it overlaps and measure the length with a ruler.

Step 4: Check the size chart below to find which size is right for you.

Tip: Head shapes vary — some people have round heads, some oval. Our caps have an adjustable strap, so they sit comfortably on both shapes. Measure where you want the cap to sit — usually just above the ears and across the forehead.

Repeat the measurement twice to be sure. A difference of one centimetre can mean the difference between a comfortable and a tight cap. If you're right on the boundary between two sizes, we recommend choosing the larger one — comfort always comes first.

Don't measure over thick hair tied in a bun or ponytail. Your hair should be down, the way you'd normally wear it with a cap. And don't worry — most people are surprised how easily head circumference is measured. It literally takes a minute.

Hat size chart

The following chart will help you convert your head circumference in centimetres and find which Head of Wonder size is right for you. The "Head circumference" column shows the value you measured in the previous step. The "Head of Wonder" column shows which product to look for.

56–58Standard (M/L) — not our range
58–59Standard (L) — not our range
60–63✓ XL — Head of Wonder
63–65+XXL — coming soon

Our XL products are engineered for a circumference of 61 cm and fit comfortably between 60 and 63 cm. Size XXL (engineered for 64 cm, for heads 63–65 cm) will be available soon.

We include standard sizes (S/M to L) for comparison, so you can understand why regular caps don't fit. Head of Wonder starts where others end.

Do I have a big head?

If you've ever asked yourself this question, you're definitely not alone. The average head circumference for an adult man is approximately 56–58 cm, for women roughly 54–56 cm. If you measure 59 cm or more, standard "one size" caps will pinch, sit high on your head, or leave red marks on your forehead.

From 60 cm you need size XL. From 63 cm you'll want XXL — we're preparing that at Head of Wonder and it will be on sale soon.

Roughly 15–20% of adults have a head circumference of 59 cm or more. That means you're no exception — the fashion industry has simply overlooked you for a long time. Having a bigger head isn't anything unusual. It's just a size that most brands ignore. We don't.

You'll recognise it easily: when you put on a cap in a shop and it sits high on the crown of your head, or when a snapback won't close on the last notch — then your head isn't "too big." The cap is simply too small. It's the same as trying on shoes two sizes too small. The problem isn't your foot — it's the shoe.

If you're thinking "that's exactly me," you're in the right place. Head of Wonder exists precisely so that people with bigger heads can finally have caps and beanies that fit from the very first try.

How Head of Wonder caps are different

It's not just about taking a standard cap and stretching it. Every one of our products is designed from the ground up for bigger heads. We use different cuts, different widths, and different proportions. Here's the exact difference:

Deeper crown: Our caps have a taller crown, so they don't sit on top of your head but comfortably wrap around it. You'll appreciate this difference with our XL baseball caps and XL dad hats for big heads.

Wider internal band: The internal circumference is cut for 61 cm (XL), not the standard 58 cm. That means no pinching and no marks.

Longer adjustable strap: Buckles, snapback closures, and hook-and-loop fasteners on our XL trucker caps and XL snapback caps are designed to actually close comfortably at a circumference of 60–63 cm.

Beanies and winter hats: Our merino wool beanies and XL beanies have more fabric, greater stretch, and a deeper cut — they cover your ears without riding up.

The difference is visible at first glance. A standard cap on a big head looks like a too-small hat — it sits high, the brim sticks out, and the overall impression is uncomfortable. Our XL caps look exactly the way they should — natural, stylish, and comfortable.

Frequently asked questions

What size cap do I need for a 60 cm head?

Size XL — that's exactly what we make. Our caps and beanies are designed for a circumference of 60–63 cm. Take a look at our full range of XL caps.

What size cap do I need for a 62 cm head?

Size XL. Our products are engineered precisely for 61 cm — that's our core size.

What size cap for a 64 cm head?

Size XXL — we're preparing it now and it will be available soon. In the meantime, our XL size can work for heads around 63–64 cm, though it will sit more snugly.

What's the difference between an XL and XXL cap?

XL is engineered for a circumference of 61 cm and fits comfortably at 60–63 cm. XXL will be engineered for 64 cm and cover the range of 63–65 cm.

How should a cap fit properly?

Snug but not tight. You should be able to comfortably slide one finger between your forehead and the cap. After taking it off, there should be no red marks on your forehead. If that happens with regular caps, you probably need a bigger size.

Do you ship to Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark?

Yes. We ship to 10 EU countries. Free shipping on orders over €50. You'll find the details on our shipping and returns page.

Can I return a cap if it doesn't fit?

Of course. You have 14 days to return it. You'll find the full terms in our return policy.

Why don't regular caps fit my head?

Most caps are designed for a circumference of 56–58 cm. If you measure 60 cm or more, standard caps will simply be too small. It's not your head — it's a gap in the fashion industry's range. Regular brands make "one size" caps that only fit an average head. Head of Wonder fills that gap with caps and beanies designed specifically for you.
