Best Caps for Big Heads in 2026 — XL Hats That Actually Fit
Share
If your head measures 60 centimetres or more, you already know the drill. You pick up a cap, put it on — and it perches on top of your head like it's afraid to commit. The next one squeezes your temples. A third one closes on the very last notch, and twenty minutes later there's a red groove across your forehead. So you take it off, put it back, and walk out empty-handed. Again.
This isn't a roundup of ten random affiliate products. We're writing this at Head of Wonder because this exact problem is why we started making our own caps. So here's what actually works for a big head, what to look for when choosing, and what you can order from Europe today.
Why standard caps don't fit big heads
It's not your head. It's the fact that 90 per cent of caps on the market are built for a circumference of 56–58 cm. That's called "standard" — and if you measure 60 or above, standard simply falls short. But it's not just a size issue. Four construction details make or break the fit.
Shallow crown. The panels are low. The cap doesn't sit on your head — it sits on top of it. It looks like you borrowed it from someone two sizes smaller.
Narrow inner circumference. Not just the strap at the back. The entire inner loop — seams, sweatband, shape — is cut for a smaller head. Even with the strap maxed out, the cap's basic geometry doesn't match yours.
Short closure. Metal buckle, snapback — every closure has a limit. On most caps, that limit is 59 cm. Beyond that? Tough luck.
Small brim. Most people miss this. A brim designed for a standard cap looks disproportionately stubby on a larger head. Like wearing a cap two sizes too small — because, effectively, that's what you're doing.
XL caps address all four points at once. Deeper crown, wider cut, longer closure, proportional brim. You'll feel the difference the second you put one on.
5 cap styles for big heads
Big head doesn't mean one style and done. At Head of Wonder we make five types — each with its own character, its own cut, and its own sweet spot.
1. Trucker hat — when your head needs to breathe
Solid front panel, mesh back. Your head won't overheat. The overall vibe is a bit more relaxed than a baseball cap — more outdoors, more weekend, more "I'm going to the park and I don't care." In summer, hands down the most practical choice — that mesh rear panel makes a surprisingly big difference once the temperature climbs past 25 degrees.
XL trucker hats — all with a deeper crown and snapback closure. The XL Cap Olive stands out without shouting — olive green works with almost any outfit and bridges the gap between casual and put-together. For clean, logo-free design, check the XL Minimalist Cap Black.
2. Baseball cap — the one that always works
Six-panel, structured crown, curved brim. The most versatile cap in existence. With jeans, with a blazer, on a bike, at the weekend market. If you could only own one cap, this is the one.
Our XL baseball caps feature a deeper crown, full-cotton construction, embroidered text, and a metal buckle at the back for stepless adjustment. Centred on 62 cm, comfortable from 60 to 63 cm. Six colours — from understated to eye-catching.
A solid starting point: XL Cap Navy Blue — dark blue that works year-round, from tee to button-down. Or XL Cap Beige — goes with everything and doesn't ask for attention.
3. Snapback — flat brim, sharp look
Flat brim, structured crown, plastic snapback closure at the back. Bolder than a baseball cap. A touch of streetwear, a touch of hip-hop heritage. It doesn't suit everyone — but those it suits look brilliant. You can keep the brim flat or bend it over time — your call.
Snapback advantage for big heads: the plastic closure has many notches, so adjusting is fast. Safe bet: XL Snapback Black from the XL snapback collection.
4. Dad hat — for those who just want comfort
Unstructured, soft, no internal frame. Just cotton, a curved brim, and a buckle at the back. The crown moulds to your head instead of forcing it into a predefined shape. For daily wear, probably the most comfortable option of all. Put it on, forget about it, keep going.
Particularly good for oval-shaped heads — the soft crown follows natural contours without sticking out anywhere.
XL dad hats come in black and light grey. Tip: XL Dad Hat Light Grey — pairs with anything and you'll barely feel it on your head.
5. Winter beanie — because a cap won't cut it in December
Same story, different season. Standard beanies on a big head either ride up or squeeze your ears. Our XL winter beanies come in two versions: classic knit acrylic and premium Australian merino wool. Merino naturally retains warmth, wicks moisture, and doesn't itch — once you try it, you won't go back.

Match the style to your head shape
Circumference tells you what size you need. Head shape tells you which style will look best. This rarely gets discussed — but it makes a huge difference in whether a cap looks "right" or slightly off.
Rounder head? Go for a structured cap — baseball cap or snapback. The firm crown visually elongates the shape and adds some definition.
Longer or oval head? Dad hat. The soft crown follows your natural contours instead of fighting them.
Trucker hats work for both shapes — the rigid front panel keeps structure while the mesh back adapts. A solid all-rounder.
Not sure? Start with a baseball cap. It suits nearly every head shape and is the safest first pick.
What about other brands?
We're not going to pretend we're the only option in the world. In the US, brands like BigHeadCaps and Mammoth Headwear make solid products. The catch? Inch-based sizing (7¾, 7⅞ — great if you know what that means), expensive shipping to Europe, a three-week wait, and customs might tack on VAT and duties at the border. On paper it's an alternative; in practice it's a headache.
Within Europe, the field is smaller. Germany's BigBrains.co offers a limited range. And then there's us. We design in centimetres, ship from Prague as an intra-EU parcel — no customs, no surprises. Prices in euros (or local currencies depending on your market), delivery in a few working days. For larger orders, shipping is free.
How to measure your head
All you need is a soft measuring tape — or a piece of string and a ruler. Wrap it around your head one centimetre above your ears, across the widest part of your forehead — right where a cap would naturally sit. Keep it level, not angled. Measure twice, take the larger number. Two minutes of your time.
