The world is full of wonder, and one of its smaller ones is putting on a cap and having it simply fit. If your tape reads 61 cm, you probably know the opposite feeling: the strap on its last notch, a red line across your forehead, the cap sitting on top of your head instead of around it.

Why 61 cm is the tipping point

Most caps are sold as one size, and one size means an average head. At 61 cm you're past that. We're not talking about a few millimetres that a bit of elastic could absorb, either. The difference sits in the depth of the crown, the width of the inner band, and how many positions the strap actually has. That's why an ordinary cap rides high on your crown and leaves a red line behind when you take it off.

Everything we make starts at 61 cm. The inner circumference of XL comes from that number, and the adjustment at the back covers 60 to 63 cm. How to measure your head so the numbers hold up

  1. Use a tailor's tape. If you don't have one, a piece of string held against a ruler afterwards works fine.
  2. Wrap the tape around your head about 1 cm above your ears, running it across the middle of your forehead, the widest point.
  3. Keep the tape snug, but don't pull it. One finger should slide underneath comfortably.
  4. Measure with your hair the way you normally wear it under a cap. Not in a bun, not in a ponytail, not wet.
  5. Measure twice. If the two numbers differ, take the higher one. A single centimetre decides whether a cap is comfortable or tight.
  6. A result of 61 cm means XL. If you land exactly between two sizes, take the larger one.

Four XL styles and who each one suits

  1. Baseball cap: a structured shape with a stiff front panel and a slightly curved brim. It holds its form and gives you a clean line. You'll find them in the XL baseball caps collection.

  5. At 61 cm the closure matters as much as the style. A buckle adjusts smoothly, a snapback goes notch by notch. Either way you keep room in both directions, so there's space to fine tune.

Organic cotton and what to expect from it

We make our caps from organic cotton. It feels good against the skin, it takes the shape of your head, and after a few wears it settles exactly where you want it. On the trucker models, mesh on the back panels carries the heat away. That's the whole materials list.

How to tell the cap actually fits

  1. One finger slides comfortably between your forehead and the cap.
  2. No red mark is left on your forehead after you take it off.
  3. When you lean forward, the cap holds and doesn't slide backwards.
  4. The crown wraps around your head; the cap doesn't perch on top of it.
  5. The strap at the back still has room in both directions, so you can tighten or loosen it.
  6. Nothing presses above the ears or where the strap fastens. Pressure at a single point means the size is too small, not that your head is the wrong shape.

When the tape reads more than 63 cm

The tape doesn't lie. If it reads 64 or 65 cm, XL will be right on the edge. You'll fasten it, but it won't be a cap you can wear all day. For heads like that we currently have one model in XXL, for 62 to 65 cm: the black minimalist trucker. Above 65 cm the range doesn't reach, and I won't pretend otherwise.

At exactly 62 or 63 cm you can take either size on that trucker. XL will sit closer, XXL looser. On every other model XL is the only size we make, and at 61 cm it's the right call. The rest of the range sits together under all XL caps.

It won't. 60 cm is the lower end of the XL range, and the strap at the back tightens enough to hold the cap in place. At 60 cm you'll pull it in further than someone at 61 cm would, but the cap still wraps around your head and won't spin. The check is simple: one finger should slide under the front edge, and the cap shouldn't slip backwards when you lean forward.

If it comes out at 61 cm, XL is the right choice whatever your head shape.

Do you have anything for a head circumference above 63 cm?

Yes, one model. The black minimalist trucker also comes in XXL, for a head circumference of 62 to 65 cm. The baseball caps, snapbacks and dad hats we make in XL only, for 60 to 63 cm. Above 65 cm we don't have anything yet. If you're right between the two sizes, at 62 or 63 cm, take the larger one on that model. Comfort comes first.

What are the caps made from?

Where do you ship and how long does delivery take?

We ship from our warehouse in Prague to every country in the European Union. We don't ship outside the EU yet, so the UK, Switzerland, Norway and the US aren't covered. Orders go out within two working days. In Czechia, delivery usually takes one to two working days after dispatch; elsewhere in the EU it takes several working days, depending on where it's going. What if the cap doesn't fit me?

Then you send it back, no harm done. Email info@headofwonder.com with your name and order number and we'll sort it out. The cap has to be unworn and show no signs of use, and return postage is on you. We refund to the same payment method you used at checkout. If your parcel arrives damaged, send me a photo and your order number and I'll send a new one free of charge, with nothing to return.
